BBW stands for big beautiful woman. It is a term for a woman with a larger, curvier body, used by women about themselves, in dating and in adult adverts. It began as a positive label and is still meant as one.
Where it comes from
The phrase dates from the late 1970s, when a US magazine of the same name set out to celebrate larger women. It spread through dating sites and adult advertising, and it is now a standard label on escort and dating profiles.
What it signals in an advert
BBW is a label the person chooses for herself, not a measured size. There is no agreed definition, and it can cover anything from curvy to much larger, so the photographs and her own description say more than the letters do. Other labels in the same family:
- Curvy. A softer, shapely build, usually smaller than a BBW.
- Plus size. The fashion industry’s term for larger sizes.
- SSBBW. Super size big beautiful woman, a further label some use.
- BHM. Big handsome man, the male equivalent.
What the measured data shows
This site counts the public London profiles that carry each label. The BBW category page shows how many carry it, where they are based and what they start at, and the curvy category page does the same for curvy. A label describes how someone presents, not what a booking involves.
Language and respect
Use the word she uses for herself. Some people prefer BBW, some prefer curvy or plus size, and some reclaim “fat” as a plain description. Comments about a person’s body that she has not invited are rude in any setting, and they are not a compliment because they are meant kindly.
Booking
The first message and the checks are the same whatever the label: read the whole profile, agree the rate, the time and the place, and keep to what was agreed. How booking works covers it, and the escort shorthand guide explains the other letters in an advert.
