Breadcrumbing is giving someone just enough attention to keep them interested, and never enough to go anywhere. A message every few days, warmth without plans, a trail of crumbs that leads nowhere. It is more wearing than being ghosted because it lasts longer.
What it looks like
- Replies arrive, but days late and with nothing in them.
- Lots of maybe, soon and we should, and no date ever proposed.
- Plans made and broken, always for a reason that sounds fine.
- Attention spikes whenever you start to drift, then drops again.
- They are visibly active elsewhere while leaving you on read.
The pattern is the giveaway. Any one of those is life getting in the way. All of them, repeatedly, is a decision.
Why people do it
Usually not a plan. Most breadcrumbing is somebody who likes the attention but does not want the person, and cannot bring themselves to say so. Keeping you warm costs them a message a week and saves them an awkward conversation. Some do it deliberately to keep options open. The effect on you is identical either way.
The test
Propose something specific: a day, a time, a place. Someone interested will either accept or offer another day. A breadcrumber will be enthusiastic in principle and vague in practice. Do it twice and you have your answer without needing a confrontation.
What to do
Stop replying at their pace. You can say directly that you are after something more definite, which occasionally produces a real answer. Mostly the useful move is simply to put your attention elsewhere.
Where this grates most is for people who are busy and want their time to mean something. An arrangement with stated terms, a time and a price has the opposite problem to this one. What an escort is covers that, and the slang guide has the rest of the vocabulary.
