Independent escorts in London: how they differ from agencies

What independent means, how an agency differs, and what changes in price, screening and risk.

Last checked October 2026

An independent escort in London advertises, screens and sees clients herself, with no agency in between. An agency escort works through a company that takes the booking, sends her to the client and keeps a share of the fee. Both are lawful in England and Wales. The difference is who runs the booking, and that changes the price, the screening and how much you can check beforehand.

What independent means

An independent sets her own rates, hours, boundaries and list of services, and answers her own messages. She may advertise on directories, on her own website or both, and she may see clients at her own address, which is an incall, or travel to a hotel, which is an outcall. Incall and outcall explains the difference.

The word is also a marketing label. Some agencies list their workers as independent because it sells, so the label alone proves nothing. What matters is who actually takes the booking and who keeps the money.

What an agency does

An agency takes enquiries, matches a client with an escort, arranges the time and place, and charges the fee, from which the escort receives a share. Many agencies vet the people they send, and some ask clients for a reference or a deposit. An agency that introduces clients and takes a fee for it is lawful.

The offence is controlling another person’s prostitution for gain, under section 53 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. An agency crosses that line when it controls the escort and not just the booking: setting her hours, fining her, keeping her earnings or deciding what she must do. How they compare

  • Price. An independent sets her own rate. An agency’s fee includes its share, so the same escort can cost more through an agency, although agencies sometimes offer lower priced bookings. What escorts charge has the measured London rates.
  • Screening. An independent usually screens the client herself, which may mean asking for a name, a phone number or a reference. With an agency, the escort may know less about who is coming.
  • Choice. An agency can offer several escorts from one call. An independent is one person, and what she lists is what you can expect to agree.
  • Privacy. With an agency, your details are held by a company. With an independent, they are held by one person. Ask how they are kept either way.
  • Accountability. If something goes wrong, an agency has a name and a complaints route. An independent does not, so reviews and screening matter more. How to read escort reviews covers the signs of fake ones.

Signs of a genuine independent

  • The same name, photographs and phone number across the places she advertises.
  • Messages in her own voice, with specific answers about rates, hours and what she offers.
  • Clear terms before you travel, and no pressure to book at once.
  • No request for money by gift card or cryptocurrency, and no deposit asked before either of you has verified the other.

Signs of an agency calling itself independent

  • One phone number shared by several “independent” profiles.
  • A different person answering from the one named in the advert, or a driver or “maid” who takes the money.
  • The same photographs under several names.

None of these means anything unlawful is happening, but they tell you who you are really dealing with. If someone seems frightened, coached or controlled, leave and read safety and help.

Which to choose

An independent suits you if you want a personal arrangement and are comfortable agreeing the details yourself. An agency suits you if you want someone else to handle the booking, a choice from one call, or a fixed process. How booking works covers the first message for either.

Common questions

What is an independent escort?

An escort who advertises, screens and sees clients herself, with no agency in between.

Is an independent escort cheaper than an agency?

Often, because there is no agency share in the fee, but an independent sets her own rate and it can be higher or lower. Compare the measured London rates before you book.

Are agencies legal?

Yes, if they introduce clients and take a fee. It becomes an offence when someone controls another person's prostitution for gain, such as by setting her hours or keeping her earnings.

How can I tell if an independent is really independent?

Look for the same name, photographs and number across her profiles, messages in her own voice, and clear terms. One number shared by several profiles points to an agency.

Who is safer to book, an independent or an agency?

Neither is safer by default. An independent screens you herself, and an agency gives you a name to complain to. Verification, reviews and clear terms matter either way.

How do I book an escort?

Send one short message with your first name, the date and time, how long you want, and whether you are asking for incall or outcall. Expect a reply with confirmation, a screening step and sometimes a deposit. Keep it polite and keep it brief.
