What is yoni massage?

A tantra-inspired massage focused on the vulva: what a session involves, the claims made and what to ask first.

Last checked October 2026

Yoni massage is a tantra-inspired massage that focuses on the vulva and the area around it, offered by practitioners who describe it as a way to relax, build body awareness or work through tension. “Yoni” is the Sanskrit word for the vulva, often translated as “sacred space”.

What a session involves

It starts with a conversation about boundaries and what you want from the session, then usually a slower, whole body massage with breath work before any intimate touch. Whether intimate touch is part of it, and how far it goes, varies by practitioner and is always agreed beforehand. Sessions typically last between an hour and two. Consent is ongoing: you can change your mind or stop at any point.

Therapy or sexual service

Practitioners often call it healing or therapeutic, and some clients do find it relaxing or emotionally significant. There is limited clinical evidence for specific health claims, and a good practitioner does not make them. Tantra practitioners are not regulated in the UK, so there is no licence to check. It is also not the same as medical pelvic floor care, which is delivered by regulated clinicians such as specialist physiotherapists.

In law, touching someone’s genitals for payment is a sexual service. In England and Wales buying one between consenting adults is not a crime, but the surrounding rules still apply: see the UK law guide. A licensed massage premises will not offer it.

Who offers it

Practitioners are both women and men. Some work only with women, some with couples and some with anyone. Check who a session is for before you book, because the same word is used for quite different services.

What to ask first

  • Their training and how long they have practised, and whether they have references
  • Exactly what is and is not included, in their own words
  • Where it takes place, and what the hygiene arrangements are
  • How they handle a request to stop
  • Anything health related to mention beforehand, such as pregnancy, recent surgery, infection, pain or past trauma, and talk to a doctor if you are unsure

How it differs from the others

Lingam massage is the equivalent for the penis. Tantric massage is the whole body practice both are drawn from, and sensual massage is the gentler cousin.
