What does submissive mean?

A submissive follows within limits they have set. What the word means, what it does not, and how consent works.

Last checked October 2026

Submissive describes a person who takes the following role in a consensual dynamic or session. It is a chosen role with limits, not a personality trait, and it is never a licence for the other person to ignore a no.

What it means

In BDSM, a submissive, often shortened to “sub”, agrees to follow the other person’s lead within limits both have talked through. The partner who leads is the dominant, or “dom”, and a woman in that role may be called a domme. A person who enjoys both roles is a “switch”.

The role is agreed, not assumed. A submissive keeps the right to stop at any time, and a good dominant checks in. What is BDSM? explains the wider vocabulary and how consent works.

In an escort advert

An escort who lists submissive is offering a booking in which she follows and the client leads, within the limits she has set. It is a role she plays, agreed beforehand, and it does not mean she will do anything she is asked. Domination is the reverse, with the escort in charge. Fetish and domination escorts sets the three labels side by side.

Consent and limits

  • Talk first. Settle what is on offer and what is not before you meet, in writing if you can.
  • Hard and soft limits. A hard limit is never crossed. A soft limit is something to approach carefully, if at all.
  • A safe word. A word that stops everything at once, agreed in advance and respected every time.
  • Aftercare. Time after a session to talk and settle. It is part of the booking.

What submissive does not mean

It does not mean weak, and it does not mean consent to everything. A submissive is the one who sets the limits, and the person leading is responsible for staying inside them.

The law

In England and Wales consent is not a defence to serious injury, so a responsible dominant or escort keeps well within it. Whether the arrangement is lawful otherwise follows the same rules as any escort booking: see Is escorting legal in the UK?
